Nick Bosa of the 49ers credited two fourth-down stops for the incredible comeback win over the Detroit Lions.
After the game, Bosa told NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco how the Lions' fourth-down mistakes cost them.
“That bit them in the butt. Go for it on fourth down often backfires, Bosa remarked.
First occurred midway through the third quarter with the Lions ahead 24-10 in San Francisco territory. Instead of kicking a field goal, Lions coach Dan Campbell went for it, failing and turning the ball over.
A San Francisco score on the ensuing 49ers possession trimmed the advantage to seven points, turning the game around.
In the fourth quarter, the Lions drove deep into 49ers territory again. Instead of shooting a field goal to tie the game, they went for it again on fourth down. Another 49ers score followed the turnover on downs to put the game away.
At halftime, the Lions led 24-7 after dominating the 49ers in the first quarter. The 49ers won their NFL-record 38th playoff game and advanced to their eighth Super Bowl after rallying to win the NFC Championship against the Green Bay Packers the week before.
