The contest was the NFC championship game. They were guaranteed a berth in Super Bowl LVIII with the victory.
In a breathtaking first half in San Francisco, the Lions controlled the ball and the scoreboard. The 49ers had a formidable defensive front in the first half, but they still managed to win the line of scrimmage and rush for 148 yards to take a 24-7 lead into halftime. The third quarter, however, arrived.
Brandon Aiyuk's wild catch and score and another by Christian McCaffrey—followed by a devastating Lions fumble—led the 48ers to a 17-point explosion in the third quarter.
The Lions' 17-point advantage at halftime was utterly erased by that. In the fourth quarter, the 49ers kicked a field goal from 33 yards out to give themselves the lead for the first time in the game.
The 49ers' drive was kept alive and set up for an Elijah Mitchell score thanks to strong runs by Brock Purdy and McCaffrey following a great stop. As a result, they were ahead by ten points toward the end of the third quarter. The Lions' last touchdown drive, spearheaded by Jared Goff, came far too late. The 49ers won by a three-point margin because their onside kick was unsuccessful.
The 49ers will face the Chiefs of Kansas City in the big game. The Chiefs advanced to their fourth straight Super Bowl with an earlier victory over the Baltimore Ravens in Sunday's AFC championship game.
